Sustainability

Because we’re not just passing through, sustainability is designed into everything we do.

West Coast Industries’ history and longevity, manufacturing furniture since 1939, is attributed to our being good neighbors. We build in California, one of the strictest states with environmental regulations and a leader in sustainability. We always comply and in most cases exceed California state regulations not just because they are mandated, but because the standards are good for our community, customers, and the environment. West Coast Industries' commitment is shown through its dedication to supply-chain management, waste reduction, recycling efforts and the use of eco-friendly materials.

Our approach to the environment encompasses four essential elements: materials, process, design, and people. While it is our goal to be as sustainable as possible, we see this goal as a process, not a destination. Our commitment to the environment includes all our business practices.

Materials

• The foam used for our upholstered seat and back cushions complies with TB-117, allowing us to maintain a high-quality fit and feel and high environmental standards.
• We use water-based SABA glue on all upholstered seating.
• The core materials we use for our tabletops are No Added Urea Formaldehyde (NAUF). Eliminating formaldehyde off gassing is good for our clients as well as our factory workers.
• Our natural woods are USA grown and harvested under federally mandated, controlled forestation. Forest Stewardship Council® (FSC®) materials are available upon request.
• Steel table columns come from the nation’s largest recycler of scrap steel. Our columns consist of an average of 91.7 percent recycled steel.
• We use a thermal fused powder coating process with a 100% capture-filter system.
• We use a trivalent plating process, which uses 96 percent less chromium than conventional plating processes, and doesn’t produce toxic sludge.
• We use blanket wrap carriers whenever possible to limit the use of cardboard and other packaging materials.
• We use only waterborne UV finishes instead of solvent-based finishes.
• Our solid-surface Corian® tabletops are environmentally friendly. For more information visit the Corian® website.
• Our Caesarstone® quartz table tops have received important independent certification (Greenguard® Gold) for its environmental performance. For more information visit the Caesarstone® website.
• We prioritize sourcing local suppliers to minimize transportation emissions and to support our local community.

We are looking forward to the future possibilities of sustainability, including recycling more materials and reducing our waste. We possess the flexibility and forethought to adopt new environmentally sound technology and ideas as they emerge.

Facilities

• In 2018, we moved and upgraded our manufacturing facilities. We optimized our factories locations to reduce emissions through proximity to supplies and out bound transportation.
• Our new facilities promote a better working environment with significant natural lighting on both production floors from skylights and windows.
• A majority our factory lighting is low energy LED with a strategic plan in place to continue upgrading to reach 100%.
• Investing in new, high efficiency equipment including compressors, dust collection, powder coat oven and low water plumbing fixtures.

Process

• Throughout our manufacturing facility we strive to reduce waste whether material or energy. Our factories uses energy efficient fluorescent and sodium lighting to reduce our energy need. Materials and products are moved using propane fuel forklifts which produce on average 35% fewer carbon monoxide emissions than comparable gasoline powered forklifts. West Coast Industries uses high volume dust and vapor collection systems applied at point of generation to limit airborne pollutants.
• When shipping our products we use blanket wrap carriers whenever possible to limit the use of cardboard and other packaging materials. When cardboard packing material is required, we use cardboard which is made of 80% recycled material. We consolidate our shipments of tables and banquettes in complete truck loads when possible to reduce carbon emissions caused by shipping with multiple trucks.
